Thinking outside the square.

We see Education as a vital part of our mission. As "Dome Evangelists" we are convinced that Domes provide many benefits not found in contemporary structures. The Dome is a practical art form combining well known engineering principles with the aesthetic beauty of spherical geometry. 

Not all adults get it, but the younger generation adopts unique concepts much more readily. That’s why OUTBACK DOMES have  begun a program of School Incursions. Our School Presentations not only educate and inspire, but they also give kids an opportunity to work as a team. By using step by step instructions and supervision they will assemble a beautiful 1 metre diameter geodesic dome. Each dome consists of 165 separate lightweight alloy strut tubes as well as fasteners.

 

The OUTBACK DOMES School incursion combines education with hands-on experience as students team-build beautiful geodesic domes! GeoDomes became the life-work of inventor and genius "Bucky" Fuller who, during the 1940s, 50s and 60s promoted the dome as humanity’s  best possible future habitat.The geodesic dome is often considered the most efficient structural design ever devised. ‘Do more with less,’ meaning fewer materials and less waste.

Well, we never did get out of our rectangular box style houses, but domes have been used successfully  in harsh climates like the Antarctic for many years. One day Domes could even provide accommodation  on the Moon or Mars!

This incursion combines History  with Science and Geometry and then challenges your students with a sense of purpose and  accomplishment as they assemble a model dome from scratch. We believe that unique structures inspire creative people.


At the moment, our GeoDome building Incursions are designed for Primary Grades 5 & 6 located in Melbourne and surrounding regions. OUTBACK DOMES currently has 3 GeoDome models created specifically to introduce Year 5 and Year 6 students to the world of Geodesics. Each dome kit can be assembled by a team of 15 to 20 in an hour or so. Technically speaking, the Dome is a 3V Icosahedron comprising 165 individual struts held together by 61 hubs.
